Shiny Wilson is a legendary Indian middle-distance runner who dominated the national 800m event for 14 years. She represented India in over 75 international competitions and competed in four Olympic Games (1984, 1988, 1992, and 1996). Notably, she was the first Indian woman to reach the Olympic semi-finals in the 800m and captained the Indian contingent at the 1992 Olympics. Alongside P.T. Usha, Shiny powered India to the 4x400m relay final at the 1984 Olympics, marking a historic achievement for Indian athletics. Over her illustrious career, she won seven gold, six silver, and two bronze medals across six consecutive Asian Track & Field Championships from 1985. At the South Asian Federation Games, she secured a remarkable total of 18 gold and two silver medals. Shiny Wilson has been honoured with several prestigious awards, including the Arjuna Award (1984), the Padma Shri (1998), and multiple lifetime achievement awards from organisations such as CNN-IBN and JFW. She has also been recognised internationally, receiving honours from UNICEF in Los Angeles (2002) and the Chinese Government (1991) for her outstanding contribution to sport.
