Sanjib Chakraborty is a celebrated former international swimmer and national champion from West Bengal who dominated Indian swimming during the 1980s and early 1990s. He represented India in prestigious events such as the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, winning 10 gold medals at the South Asian Federation (SAF) Games between 1984 and 1992, as well as silver and bronze medals at the 1980 Asian Championships. Holding multiple national records, he established himself as one of India’s top swimmers of his era. After retiring from competitive swimming, Sanjib successfully transitioned into coaching, mentoring several national-level athletes and contributing significantly to the sport’s development. He has been recognized with the "Best Sportsman" award by the West Bengal Sports Journalists’ Association and the Railway Ministry, and in 2017, he received the prestigious "Banglar Gourav" award from the Government of West Bengal. Sanjib Chakraborty is also known for his role as the coach and husband of renowned long-distance swimmer Bula Chowdhury, further underscoring his lasting impact on Indian swimming.
