Jayasankar Menon

Jayasankar Menon is a celebrated former basketball player and captain of the Indian National Team, widely recognised for his exceptional contributions to the sport. A standout athlete in Indian basketball, Menon was the first player from the South Asian region to be selected for the Asian All-Star Basketball Team, a prestigious achievement that led him to represent the team at the Basketball Extravaganza in Seoul in 1997. He was part of an elite group of 16 top basketball players from across Asia, marking a significant milestone in his career.

Throughout his career, Jayasankar Menon earned numerous accolades and was a dominant force in national and international basketball. He captained the Indian Basketball Team at the Asian Basketball Championship in 1996, held in Seoul, leading his team with strength and skill. A consistent performer in the Senior Nationals, he participated in 15 tournaments, securing five Gold Medals. His remarkable talent also earned him the MVP Award in two Interzone Basketball Championships. In addition to his national success, Menon left a lasting impact at international competitions. He was part of the Indian team that won two Gold Medals at the SAF Games held in Colombo (1991) and Chennai (1995). He was also a key member of the team that secured a Silver Medal at the Kelantan International Basketball Tournament in Malaysia (1991). Over the course of his 11-year international career, Menon represented India in four Asian Basketball Confederation Championships held in Bangkok (1987), Beijing (1989), Kobe (1991), and Seoul (1995).

Jayasankar Menon’s exceptional achievements and leadership on the court earned him the prestigious Guru Acharya Award and the Golden Star Award in 2016, conferred by NIER, New Delhi. His dedication to the sport and his legacy as an athlete continues to inspire future generations of basketball players. In addition to his illustrious sporting career, Jayasankar Menon serves as the Secretary General of the SWC State Association Executive Committee – Tamil Nadu, where he actively contributes to the development and governance of student sports.
