Prof (Dr.) Suman Sharma is an Arjuna Awardee and former Indian basketball player, the first woman to receive the Arjuna Award in Basketball (1983), also honoured with the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award (1984) and Mrs. Indira Gandhi Award (1985); declared “Best Sports Girl of the Year” in 1979, she represented India in the 8th, 9th, and 10th Asian Basketball Confederation Championships—captaining the 1982 team—and at the 9th Asian Games in New Delhi, winning six Gold and one Silver Medal at Senior Nationals; she later served as Lady Vice President of the Basketball Federation of India, Chairperson of the Indian Women’s Selection Committee, Vice President of the Punjab Basketball Association, and retired as Professor of Physical Education, continuing her lifelong dedication to Indian basketball as a player, coach, selector, and administrator.
