Olympian Sabastian Xavier

Sebastian Xavier is a renowned Arjuna Awardee and Olympian who has made an indelible mark in competitive swimming. Recognised as India’s fastest swimmer for over a decade, he was a dominant force in the sport during his career. He set the national record in the 50-metre freestyle with a time of 22.89 seconds, holding it for 11 years (1998–2009). In addition to this, he set multiple national records and earned accolades for his exceptional performances in various international competitions. Xavier represented India at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, participated in two Asian Games, and competed in several South Asian Games, consistently showcasing his prowess in the pool. His remarkable achievements earned him the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2000, recognising his outstanding contribution to Indian sports. He was also honoured with the Best Sportsman Award by the Prime Minister in 1993, 1997, and 1999 for his consistent excellence. His dominance extended across South Asia, winning 23 gold medals at the SAF Games and maintaining his reign as the fastest swimmer in India and South Asia from 1989 to 2000.

Beyond his sporting achievements, Xavier served as a Senior Sports Officer at Western Railway and later as an Indian Railway coach (2005–2010), where he contributed his expertise and experience to nurture the next generation of swimmers. Further extending his contributions to sports and youth development, he currently serves as the President of the Students World Cup State Association Executive Committee – Tamil Nadu. His journey of dedication, discipline, and passion continues to inspire aspiring athletes, making him a true role model in Indian sports.
