An accomplished swimming and water polo athlete, he was the All-India Inter-University Champion in 1987–1988. He completed his NSNIS Diploma in Swimming from Gandhinagar, Gujarat, under the Sports Authority of India in 1989–1990 and is a certified advanced swimming coach at both national and international levels. Since 1992, he has served as a swimming coach at renowned institutions including Netaji Indoor Stadium, Kolkata; St. Augustine School, Darjeeling; and Hindalco Industries Ltd., Renukoot. He has also coached the Indian Army swimming team and the West Bengal State team in numerous national championships.
