Sumrai Tete

Sumrai Tete, an accomplished Indian hockey player and Dhyan Chand Awardee, has made remarkable contributions to women’s hockey. She represented India in the 1998 Women’s World Cup (Netherlands) and the 2002 Asian Games (Busan), winning gold at the Afro-Asian Games (2003, Hyderabad) and the 2006 Commonwealth Games (Melbourne). She also secured silver medals at the Asia Cup (2004), Indira Gandhi Gold Cup (2005), and the Commonwealth Games (2006), where she captained the Indian women’s team to a historic silver. Selected for the Asia XI in 2002, she earned the title of Best Defender at the 2002 Champions Challenge in Johannesburg. Honoured with the Dhyan Chand Award (2017) and the Jharkhand Ratna Award (2007), among others, she later served as coach of the Indian women’s hockey team (2011–2014) and continues to contribute to the sport as a coach with South Eastern Railway.
