Wilson Cherian

Wilson Cherian is a legendary Indian swimmer renowned for his dominance in backstroke events, particularly from 1980 to 1991. He set a national record in the 200m backstroke that remained unbroken for 20 years and became the first Indian swimmer to complete the 100m backstroke in under 60 seconds. Representing India at multiple Asian Games, he notably finished fourth in the 100m backstroke at the 1982 Games. Cherian’s illustrious career includes winning 11 gold medals across four South Asian Federation (SAF) Games and being named Best Swimmer at the 1990 World Railway Meet in Rome. He was the first Indian swimmer to receive the prestigious Arjuna Award in 1988. After retiring as a senior sports officer and coach from Chennai ICF, Indian Railways, Cherian remains celebrated for his lasting impact on Indian swimming.
